Making and creating has always been a passion for Nina and following the skills she learnt at a willow sculpture making course, she developed a curiosity in how she could manipulate wire into a recognisable form.
Nina is well practised in life drawing and has an enthusiastic appreciation for nature and the human form. She has attended many creative classes and completed a foundation degree in Fine Art and has a certificate in Interior Design. She also enjoys painting, ceramics and photography and is always looking for something different that might come her way. Although she has an interest in a broad range of materials, Nina’s work remains characterised by her wireworks. She continues with self-development, always looking for new ideas and challenges.
Nina is a member of VOGA, Vale of Glamorgan Artists.
An ancient folk art form, wirework was first practised by the Egyptians to make jewellery in around 3,000 BC. By the mid-nineteenth century this lively folk art flourished with the availability of an extensive range of products from kitchen implements to wire fencing. In the 20th century, the works of Alexander Calder, Ruth Asawa, and other modern practitioners developed the medium of wire sculpture as an art form and by the 1920's, wire sculpture was introduced to the world of fine art.
I construct my sculptures freehand, each piece is shaped by hand then layers upon layers of wire are wrapped around the structure that allows a particular spontaneity and freedom to my making process. Armed with a set of pliers, I use a variety of wires such as galvanised, aluminium and silver plated wire. Every sculpture is unique, there are no two the same and I enjoy the potential that each one brings. This way
Received my two little robins promptly, bought as Christmas gifts (which I reluctantly gave away as I'd have loved to have kept them for myself!). And my grandmother loves it so much she wants to keep it on the mantelpiece all year round! Thank you, Nina!
Nina thank you so much, after collecting my Robin today I can't wait for Christmas and to see mum's face, I think its safe to say she'll have pride of place :-)
This is real talent! Keep up the good work.
